Tooling Engineer
Responsibilities:
- Health & safety: maintain safe working practices, escalate any non-conformities, near misses
- Perform daily duties as set out in department
- Promote and look to exceed GA 5S & H&S environment policies
- ensure safe use of handling equipment: crane / lifting gear, ensure load is within SWL of handling gear
- inspect lifting gear before use: quarantine & report any non-conformities with eyebolts or lifting chains
- upkeep of PM schedule on IMM tooling + downstream identified tooling
- ensure shift cover with opposite tooling engineers during holiday periods
- support business needs of extra shifts / w/end work during periods of high production demand
- addition of learning points / specific actions to each tool PM procedure, ie: core pin to sleeve fit, replacement of cap heads on any high-risk lifter assemblies
- upkeep register of tooling related costs + down time
- track daily workload of events – tool room log
- upkeep of tool tag system
- Ensure tooling complies with GA std’s and will fit local machinery
- Confirm feasibility of engineering changes related to imm tooling both internal & external where necessary
- Layout: storage of IMM tools is adhered to
- Ensure tool loan agreements are in place when transferring to other facilities
- *Ensure tools are prepared for safe transportation as per std
- Maintain sufficient critical spares, core pins/sleeves, steel, two stage ejector units etc – communicate to tool room manager
- attend daily review of issues between imm tech’s & tooling manager , input to identification of root cause and subsequent proposals to close out tooling related pfu’s
- Support trials onsite and offsite as needs arise
- Maintain asset register of all tooling
- Upkeep of “datum packs” for all tools, minimum requirement as per PM sheets, log of failures
- Identify & lead opportunities for efficiency improvements: tool dis-assembly / re-assembly sequence
- Raise & follow up PFU’s internal & external using central database where possible
About You:
- Ability to organise and prioritise workload
- Work well – SAFELY – under pressure and to strict deadlines
- Mechanical aptitude,
- Ability to use own initiative and work with minimum supervision
- Good communication / organisation skills
- Good people skills – respects GA code of ethics
- Ability to interpret & generate and maintain process documentation
- knowledge of plant processes
- Flexible and reliable, pro-active “can do” approach – work outside of normal hours will be required when business needs arise
- Respect of internal and customer requirements with respect to product quality
Desirable
- Time served toolmaker, GCSE (desirable) or equivalent in English / Mathematics, mechanical engineering
- Experience in fast paced Automotive manufacturing environment for at least 5 years, used to large tooling to at least 10 tonnes. Preferably will have experience of tooling project management
Technical
- tool & die repair / maintenance – Level 3
- GA-SP – Level 3
- computer literate – Level 3
- overhead crane – Level 3
- Tooling construction, general machining: turning, milling, surface grinding, benching, final fitting – Level 3
- Tooling procurement / project management – Level 3
- Injection Tooling Feasibility studies – Level 4
- Modification introduction – Level 4
- Recovery of breakdowns to tight time-frame – Level 4
Management (Systems and Processes)
- computer literate: MS office – Level 3
- CAD proficient – Level 3
